What is doweled construction?

Dowel construction doors are made from individual components (top, middle & bottom rails, stiles and panels) which are then jointed together by way of using large fluted dowels, which are then glued and inserted into dowel holes. The whole door is then clamped together using a hydraulic press until dry. This process is used to assemble some external and nearly all internal doors:

What is Mortice and Tennon (M&T) construction?

Mortice and Tennon DoorsM&T construction means the way in which the door is jointed together. A “Tennon” peg from one section of timber is let into a “mortised” hole in another section. The Tennon is then glued and wedged into place to secure a solid joint. The door panels are then set in waterproof mastic ensuring that the highest level of weatherproofing is achieved. Doors made from an M&T construction are traditionally better equipped to withstand the rigors of severe weather than a dowel construction door.

What is the difference between a door with Dowelled construction to that of a door with M&T construction?

Our Dowelled Hardwood doors are manufactured from kiln dried timber and are jointed using fluted dowels and modern adhesives.

Our Mortice & Tenon doors are manufactured from select kiln dried hardwoods, and are constructed using traditional Mortice & Tenon joints and modern adhesives. This ensures that the doors are constructed to the very highest standard. The panels are set in a waterproof mastic ensuring that the highest level of weatherproofing is achieved.

Are my doors solid? What is an engineered construction door?

Section of a DoorThe majority of our doors are made from solid timber. It is quite regular practice for doors to be made from engineered components. This means that doors with a face of pine, ash or oak often use a veneer over a composite solid core. Applying doors with a real wood veneer provides greater uniformity in colour and enhances the appearance of the door. It also gives the door greater stability and less chance of twisting or splitting. if you are unsure as to the construction of your door, or you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us. We are here to help!

Is the glass in the glazed doors, toughened safety glass?

Yes all glass in our glazed doors is toughened to BS6206(A) safety standards.

Glazing including double glazed Units.

All our external doors which are above 44mm thick (dowels and M&T’s) are able to accept a 14mm sealed double glazed unit. Throughout our range, there are a large number of doors with either feature, triple glazed or beveled glass.

Do i measure in inches or millimetres?

Normally we measure in Inches as this is the unit traditionally used with doors. However some properties are build with metric sized doors. We try to give both units throughout the site and the conversion table below should help where both are not present:

Do you do odd sized doors / arched frames / purpose made items?

We have a joiners shop were purpose made doors, frames, arched frames, gates and windows in both hardwood and softwood can be made to measure as well as being able to reduce the height of certain doors by removing the top or bottom rails and reducing the panels, thus allowing us to supply doors that are for example 170cm tall. We are also able to laminate extra timbers to the door edges to increase the width or height. We would be happy to work you out a quotation for anything which is not a standard product.

I need to reduce my door to suit the opening I have, how much can I take off the door?

On external doors we recommend that no more than 9mm be removed from any given edge. Sometimes door openings are a non standard size e.g. 31 1/2" x 78". We would advise that you purchase an 80” x 32” door and reduce the height rather than the width, as there is more width to the bottom rail than the door stiles.

However removing more than 1” from either the height or width will invalidate the guarantee. On internal doors, we recommend no more than 9mm (3/8 inch) be removed from the sides and top and bottom of the door. As with the external door, if a greater amount requires removal from the height of a door it should be taken from the bottom rail.

Is it possible for me to collect the doors myself?

We are more than happy for you to collect the doors yourself. Our opening times are 8.30 until 6.00 Monday to Friday and 8.30 until 12.30 Saturdays. There is ample free parking outside our unit and our staff are always willing to help load your vehicle. Please see below for details on how to find us or click here.
