Care and Treatment of Your Products

12. Timber Products

12.1 the care taken during manufacture and the quality of the raw materials ensure that your timber products will give you many years of good service, providing they are treated and stored in accordance with our recommendations (see below).

12.2 Timber is a natural material, which is subject to changes in temperature and humidity, it is common for natural movement or distortion, warping, swelling or splitting to occur if the door is exposed to extremes of temperature or humidity, or it is not correctly stored, treated or hung. A bow of up to 4mm along the length of the door is considered to be within the manufactured tolerances.

Our Recommendations

12.3 Please check your door for faults i.e. damage, warping, splitting, bowing or scratched glass upon delivery or collection and before any alterations are made, as we cannot replace faulty doors after such alterations have been carried out. Carrying out alterations shall deem you to have accepted the goods supplied.

  • Where a size reduction is necessary, always take equal amounts off both edges (It is recommended that doors are not reduced by more than 10mm from any one edge.
  • Do not fit mortised locks in any rail joints.
  • Store doors in a cool, dry atmosphere and keep flat. Do not store or hang in a newly plastered room or suddenly expose to central heating or other forms of direct heat.
  • A suitable weatherboard must be fitted on all external doors and a head drip (to the frame) when fitting an outward opening door.
  • Stable doors should be fitted with weatherboards to both top and bottom halves.

Finishing Recommendations

  • It is vital that finishing treatment, stain or paint, be applied prior to installation and/or immediately thereafter. It is also essential that all cut outs for letterboxes, locks etc and all four edges are sealed with at least 3 coats (4 coats for external doors) of finishing treatment once the door has been hung. At least one coat of finishing product should be applied every two years to protect against deterioration and ensure prolonged existence.

  • Paint external doors. We advise the use of a good quality spirit based exterior quality paint with a minimum of one primer coat, two undercoats and two top (gloss). Be sure to seal any letter plate cut outs, all four edges and pay particular attention to the bottom edge underneath to avoid moisture entering the timber.

  • Stain/Varnish external doors. We advise either the use of a micro-porous wood stain or varnish, something with a “hard finish” we recommend at least one base coat followed by four top coats. Be sure to seal any letter plate cut outs, all four edges and pay particular attention to the bottom edge underneath to avoid moisture entering the timber.

  • Oils, waxes and water based treatments external doors. We DO NOT advise the use of any form of wax, oil or water based (Quick drying) treatment on your external door. We feel that they do not offer enough protection for an external door and therefore we will not offer any guarantee if they have been finished this way. If you are in any doubt please contact us for further advice.

  • Internal Doors. All types of internal doors can be treated with either paint or varnish type finishes. Certain doors such as the Ash or Oak engineered internal doors may be treated with a 'Danish Oil' or similar. Be sure to follow the manufactures recommendations on the tin. If you are in any doubt please contact us for further advise.

Guarantees

All our Doors are guaranteed against substandard manufacture for a period of 12 calendar months from the date of purchase. Any door (whole or part) found to be faulty during this period will be replaced free of charge on condition that that proper treatment and weather protection has been applied in the correct quantity to protect the timber as laid out in these terms & conditions. Any product which has not been paid for in full and where a balance is in arrears shall not guaranteed in any way whatsoever, in such a situation neither a replacement nor a repair will be offered. Our liability will be limited to the original purchase price of the goods and shall not incur any incidental costs and/or works and/or charges applied by any 3rd parties. We reserve the right to replace or repair at our discretion.
